Persistent heartburn, difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, blood in stools, anaemia, or abdominal pain may all require an endoscopy to identify the cause.

Colonoscopy is performed under sedation, so most patients feel little to no discomfort during the procedure. Mild bloating afterwards is normal and resolves quickly.

ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) is a procedure that combines endoscopy and X-ray to diagnose and treat conditions of the bile ducts and pancreas — including bile duct stones and strictures.

For average-risk adults, a colonoscopy is recommended from age 50 — or earlier if there is a family history of colorectal cancer or bowel disease. Your gastroenterologist will advise on your personal screening schedule.
